WASHINGTON, Aug. 08 (YPA) – The US President Donald Trump has threatened to eliminate trade privileges granted to Switzerland.
He asserted that Washington possesses the authority to implement unilateral measures capable of inflicting severe damage on the Swiss economy to curb a trade deficit he estimated at approximately $39 billion.
In remarks outlining US trade policy, Trump stated that he could eliminate the deficit “with a single signature”. He noted that declaring Washington’s refusal to purchase Swiss imports—particularly luxury watches and other goods—would save the United States between $39 billion and $41 billion.
He warned that such a move would shift Switzerland from a nation enjoying preferential trade status to one facing “serious problems,” as part of his administration’s broader strategy of applying economic pressure and tariffs on trade partners.
