5.5-magnitude earthquake strikes southwest China

BEIJING, Jan. 02 (YPA) – The China Seismological Center on Sunday said that earthquakes measuring 5.5 degrees on the Richter scale were recorded in Yunnan Province, located in the southwest of the country.

The center stated, in a statement, that earthquakes were recorded in Lijiang City.

The statement indicated that the epicenter of the earthquake was in Ninlan County, and its focus was at a depth of 10 kilometers.

At least 15 people were injured in the area where more than 1.2 million people live, according to the local authorities.

It is still unknown whether there was material damage as a result of the earthquake.
