Iranian navy thwarts pirate attack on oil tanker in Aden

ADEN, Nov. 01 (YPA) – The Iranian navy thwarted on Monday an pirate attack on an oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden.

The Iranian state television reported that 4 boats carrying armed men approached the tanker before crossing the Bab al-Mandab Strait, but they were unable to carry out the attack after the Iranian guard fired warning shots.

The boats participating in the attack were forced to flee, according to the Iranian news agency IRNA.

The Gulf of Aden is one of the most important waterways for the transit of oil tankers coming from the Arabian Gulf.

The Iranian navy has expanded its reach in recent years, deploying ships in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden to protect its ships from attacks by Somali pirates.
