Taliban take full control over Panjshir province

KABUL, Sept. 06 (YPA) – The Taliban  have taken control of Panjshir province north of Kabul, the Afghan capital, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement on Monday

” Panjshir was now under the control of the Taliban fighters,” he added.

In his statement, Mujahid sought to assure residents of Panjshir that they would be safe, even as scores of families reportedly fled into the mountains ahead of the Taliban’s arrival.

“We give full confidence to the honorable people of Panjshir that they will not be subjected to any discrimination, that all are our brothers, and that we will serve a country and a common goal,” Mujahid said in his statement.

Images circulated  on Social media  show Taliban members standing in front of the gate of the Governor’s Compound in Panjshir province. There was no comment from Ahmed Massoud, leader of the opposition group opposed to the Taliban forces.

Panjshir province, located near the capital Kabul, has been a haven for thousands of people who want to join the resistance movement led by Ahmed Massoud, son of the late Afghan leader Ahmad Shah Massoud, who recently warned the Taliban not to enter Panjshir province, his family’s hometown and current location, saying he has the support of forces from the previous government and residents.
