GAZA, Aug. 04 (YPA) – The Israeli occupation authorities has been continuing to detain 24 doctors from the Gaza Strip in extremely dire humanitarian conditions, amid escalating violations against medical personnel since the start of the aggression on October 7, 2023.
The Palestinian Center for Prisoners’ Defense revealed the detained doctors were subjected to systematic and deliberate abuse, leading to the deaths of doctors Adnan al-Barsh and Iyad al-Rantisi, as a result of severe torture inside detention centers, in one of the most horrific examples of the systematic targeting of Palestinian medical personnel.
The center called on the WHO and the UN to take urgent and serious action to ensure the immediate release of the detained doctors, warning that their suffering would only worsen in the absence of effective international oversight of Israeli prisons.
It pointed out that UN and reports for Human Rights and Human Rights Watch documenting that health workers were subjected to torture, ill-treatment, and psychological and physical abuse during detention, which constituted a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the Fourth Geneva Convention.
According to the center’s statistics, more than 400 doctors, nurses, technicians, and administrators have been arrested since the start of the aggression until July 2025. A number of these individuals were released in prisoner exchange deals or at various stages without formal indictments.
