Ethiopia calls on India to reject Tunisia’s proposal on Renaissance Dam

SANAA, Aug. 29 (YPA) – Ethiopian Foreign Minister Demke Mekonnen invited his Indian counterpart S.  Jaishankar, to reject the Tunisian draft resolution submitted to the UN Security Council on the Renaissance Dam.

 Mekonnen, during a phone call with Jaishankar, expressed his gratitude to the Government of India for supporting Ethiopia’s cause during the UN Security Council meeting on Ethiopia by rejecting pressure to interfere in Ethiopia’s internal affairs.

 Praising India’s support for the African Union-led negotiations on the Renaissance Dam, Demaki called on India to reject the Tunisian draft resolution submitted to the UN Security Council in contravention of the tripartite agreement to resolve matters in accordance with the terms of the Declaration of Principles.  Declaration of Principles (DOP).

 He also called on India to “condemn the terrorist Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front following a briefing on the criminal activities of the TPLF, its invasion of neighboring areas, and the exploitation of child soldiers with absolute disregard for the unilateral humanitarian ceasefire announced by the Ethiopian government.”

 In turn, Jaishankar said that India supported Ethiopia during yesterday’s Security Council meeting, expressing his confidence that Ethiopia is able to handle its internal affairs without outside interference.

 On the issue of the Renaissance Dam, he said that it is appropriate for the three countries to address their differences through dialogue and the principle of African solutions to African problems.
