5.9 magnitude earthquake hits Japan

SANAA, March 27 (YPA) –An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale hit the coast of the Miyako Islands in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan,  the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

“The epicenter of the earthquake was about 147 kilometres north of the city of Herrera,” the USGS reported.

“The epicenter was 153 kilometres deep,” it said, adding that there was no information on possible casualties and destruction.

Earlier, a 4.7-magnitude tremor was recorded in the Pacific Ocean, 189 kilometres off the east coast of Kamchatka in the Russian Far East.
