SANAA, Nov. 26 (YPA) – The American “CNN” network said that a CIA officer died as a result of wounds sustained during a mission in Somalia at the end of last week.
The network quoted a former senior official in the US administration who explained that the killed intelligence officer was a former US Navy officer, while the identity of the officer has not been announced.
This coincides with the announcement by US President Donald Trump of his intention to withdraw US forces from Somalia.
Bloomberg reported that the withdrawal of the military would allow Trump to fulfill his promise to bring American soldiers home.
The Somali President Mohamed Farmajo wrote on Twitter: “The American military support for Somalia has allowed us to fight (terrorist groups) such as Al-Shabaab, effectively and to ensure the safety of the Horn of Africa.”
He stressed that victory could only be achieved through “an ongoing US-Somali security partnership” and “capacity building support.”
The United States assists the Somali authorities in fighting the “extremist youth” group, which has close ties to the international terrorist organization Al-Qaeda.
According to US media reports, there are currently up to 700 US troops in Somalia. Last year, the United States was reported to be planning to reduce its military presence in Somalia and reduce air strikes against the movement.
