6.1 magnitude earthquake hits Philippines

SANAA, Nov. 16 (YPA) – A  6.1-magnitude earthquake hit on Sunday evening Mindanao in the Philippines.
The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center stated on its Twitter page that the epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 50 km, was initially located at the junction of 8.73 degrees north latitude and 126.28 degrees east longitude.

There were no reports of material or human losses, nor were subsequent tsunami waves announced.

It is noteworthy that the Philippines is located in an area known as the “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean, where about 90% of earthquakes occur in the world.

The last major earthquake to hit the country, measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, killed more than 220 people in the central Philippines in October 2013.

In July 1990, more than 2,400 people were killed on the northern island of Luzon, following an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, one of the most severe earthquakes to ever hit the country.
