Kuwait National Assembly pledges allegiance to new crown prince

SANAA, Oct. 8 (YPA) –

The Kuwaiti National Assembly unanimously pledged allegiance to Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmad as Crown Prince after the Emir of the country, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, issued a decree naming him on Wednesday.
The new Crown Prince took the constitutional oath before the Council, confirming his intention that Kuwait continue its “pioneering march as a state with a constitution and a democratic approach.”

He also pledged to raise the slogan of popular participation, spreading the spirit of love, tolerance and rejecting division.

The Kuwaiti constitution stipulates that the crown prince shall be appointed within one year of the Emir’s inauguration, and his appointment shall be by an Emiri order and the allegiance of the National Assembly in a special session.

Sheikh Meshaal, 80, is the half-brother of the new emir and the late emir.

Meshaal was a constant accompaniment of the late Prince during all his medical trips, including his last trip to the United States of America.

Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah held the position of Deputy Chief of the National Guard, and he is the seventh son of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

It is noteworthy that Sheikh Nawaf Al-Sabah was sworn in as Emir of the country before the Kuwaiti National Assembly, succeeding his late brother Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, on the first of this month.
