SANAA, Sept. 3 (YPA) – A cargo ship with a crew of 43 people and carrying about 6000 cows from New Zealand to China capsized after its engine failed in stormy weather in the East China Sea, according to a member of the crew who was rescued.
“Reuters” quoted the Japanese Coast Guard as saying that one of the crew members was rescued while searching for the ship, explaining that the crew included people from the Philippines, New Zealand and Australia.
A Coast Guard spokeswoman said that the person who was rescued said that one of the engines failed before the ship was hit by a wave and capsized, and that instructions were given to the crew to wear life jackets and that he had jumped into the water and had not seen any of the crew members before his rescue.
The ship (Gulf LifeStock 1) sent a distress call near Amami Oshima Island, southwest of Japan, on Wednesday, amid strong winds, high waves and heavy rain from Typhoon Mysak, which was heading towards the Korean Peninsula.
