Strong earthquake hits Indonesia

SANAA, Aug. 19 (YPA) – A strong earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, struck on Tuesday night south of Sumatra island in Indonesia, according to the US Geological Survey

It was centered in Bengkulu province on Sumatra island, 139 kilometers (86 miles) west-southwest of Bengkulu city, USGS said

The quake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), the US Geological Survey (USGS) added

No material or human casualties were reported, nor were subsequent tsunamis reported.

Indonesia is one of the most seismically active areas on Earth and forms part of the so-called Pacific ring of fire.

This region of the world is located the most active earth layers, some of which move at a speed of 7 cm per year.
