SANAA, July 7 (YPA) – The United Nations special rapporteur on extrajudicial killing and summary and arbitrary execution, Agnes Kalamar, said on Monday that the US drone attack, which killed Iranian military commander Qasim Soleimani and nine others in Iraq in January, was a violation of international law.
She added that the United States did not provide sufficient evidence that an attack targeting its interests had begun or was about to begin to justify the beating of Soleimani’s convoy as he left Baghdad airport.
In a report calling for accountability for intentional killings using armed drones and for more organized use of weapons, Kalamar wrote that the attack violated the United Nations Charter.
Kalamar, an independent investigator, told Reuters “The world is at a critical time and a potential turning point when it comes to using drones … The Security Council does not play its role and the international community, voluntarily or unwillingly, remains largely silent.”
On Thursday, Kalamar is due to present her findings to the Human Rights Council, which will give its member states an opportunity to discuss what action to take. The United States is not a member of the Council, as it withdrew from it two years ago.
