GNA forces kill 15 fighters of Libyan national army

SANAA, May 9 (YPA) – UN-backed Government of National Accord [GNA] forces’ spokesman Mohammad Kanono said that his forces were able to destroy seven armed vehicles and kill over 15 members of the Libyan National Army led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, in airstrikes.

Kanono said that the airstrikes were carried out by the air forces targeting the vicinity of al-Watiya Air Base on Friday morning.

In the early hours of this morning, a statement by the Burkan Al-Ghadab (Volcano of Rage) indicated that six members of the Libyan National Army forces at the base “surrendered” to the forces of the Western Military Region.

Al-Watiya Base has been witnessing fierce clashes between UN-backed government forces and Libyan National Army forces for days, killing the airbase commander Major Osama Amsek, the army’s general command said.

Libya has been witnessing two governments fighting for legitimacy in the country, the internationally recognized Government of National Accord in Tripoli headed by Fayez al-Sarraj, and an interim government based in the eastern city of Tobruk, supported by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, whose forces have been seeking control of the Libyan capital since April.
