Sudanese court upholds sentence of Omar al-Bashir for two years

SANAA, April 9 (YPA) – A Sudanese appeals court has upheld the sentence of ousted President Omar al-Bashir for two years after he was convicted of corruption cases.

“The appeals court upheld the conviction but we will file an appeal in the supreme court because we’re fully convinced there is no case” against Bashir, Hashem al-Jaali told AFP.

A Khartoum court last December sentenced Al-Bashir for two years in a correctional centre after being convicted of corruption in one of several cases against him.

The court also decided to confiscate 6.9 million euros, $351,770 and 5.9 million Sudanese pounds ($128,000) found in his home.

Al-Bashir, 75, was convicted of ‘forbidden wealth’ and “foreign exchange”. The two charges usually face up to 10 years in prison.

In 2009 and 2010, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Al-Bashir for “genocide,” “war crimes” and crimes against humanity during the conflict in Darfur that erupted in 2003.
