5 dead in volcano eruption in New Zealand
SANAA, Dec. 10 (YPA) – New Zealand Police confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that five people are dead, and eight people remain missing and are presumed dead after one of New Zealand’s most active volcanoes erupted on Monday, According to “Agence France Presse.
Police official Bruce Bird said on Tuesday: “47 people were on the island when the volcano erupted, which included 24 Australians, two Chinese nationals, four Germans, one Malaysian national, five New Zealanders, two people from the UK, and nine people from the US.
The Police official confirmed the killing of 5 people, injuring 31, 8 are still missing, and 3 have been discharged from the hospital.
Bird said a helicopter had gone to the island, a major tourist attraction, and surveyed it for 45 minutes to find survivors. “We do not believe that anyone else escaped the eruption,” he said.
Police will study the possibility of sending a relief mission to recover the bodies from the island on Tuesday, with the risk of additional volcanic eruptions.
