Over 50% of war victims in Yemen are children and women: UN

SANAA, Nov. 20 (YPA) – The United Nations on Wednesday revealed that more than 50% of victims of Saudi-UAE-led war in Yemen since 2015 are children and women.

“More than half of those who died as a result of the conflict in Yemen, are women and children,” UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a tweet on Twitter.

The Office reiterated its call on all parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian law and to refrain from targeting civilians, including children.

A UNICEF statement accused the parties to the Yemeni war of failing to fulfill their obligations to children.

“More than 12 million children in Yemen are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance,” said Sara Beysolow Nyanti, UNICEF representative in Yemen, in a statement.

Naynti noted that those responsible, including Hadi’s government and the coalition countries, have not fulfilled their promises and obligations to children.

The UNICEF statement affirmed that “the ongoing bloody conflict and the resulting economic crisis have put basic social services systems across the country on the brink of collapse, which has far-reaching consequences for children.”
