German Govt extends arms embargo on Saudi Arabia

BERLIN, Sept. 16 (YPA) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government will extend a moratorium on arms exports to Saudi Arabia, a government source said Monday.

The source attributed this move to the war in Yemen and the Social Democrats’ sticking to their position refusing to lift the suspension; according to “Reuters”.

Conservatives led by Merkel and their partners from Social Democrats have agreed to stop arms exports to countries involved in the Yemen conflict, as part of a deal to form an alliance.

The Berlin-based Greenpeace organization has appealed to the German government not to end the arms embargo, which expires at the end of this month.

In November 2018, Germany issued a decision to halt arms exports to Saudi Arabia, following the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at his country’s consulate in Istanbul.
