Tehran: Control of Strait of Hormuz cannot be claimed via ‘tweet’; Washington must accept reality

TEHRAN, Aug. 15 (YPA) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, stated that the Strait of Hormuz cannot be seized through a tweet, an order, or a campaign speech.

His remarks came in response to statements by US President Donald Trump, who claimed he would declare the strait a “US territory” following the conclusion of operations against Iran.

Gharibabadi emphasized that opening or closing the strait remains exclusively under Iranian authority, warning that the Iranian blockade will continue unless Washington acknowledges its strategic setbacks and abandons its illusions.

These statements follow Trump’s announcement during an event in New York regarding his intention to annex the strait after defeating Iran. The rhetoric comes amid stalled de-escalation negotiations, which were scheduled under a Pakistani-brokered memorandum of understanding reached in mid-June to end the military campaign launched by Washington and “Israel” against Iran in February. The situation had previously escalated in July, marked by military exchanges between US and Iranian forces in the region.
