Trump administration considers military operations against armed group in Mali

WASHINGTON, July 23 (YPA) – The Trump administration is considering military operations against the “Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin” (JNIM) militant group active in Mali, as part of efforts to address deteriorating security in the Sahel, according to media reports.

The British newspaper “The Independent” reported that the US administration is evaluating targeted strikes against the group. “The Washington Post” newspaper quoted current and former US officials stating that internal discussions remain ongoing, with contrasting views regarding the feasibility and ramifications of military intervention. No final decision has been reached.

If approved, Mali would become the eighth country where President Donald Trump has authorized military operations since the start of his second presidential term, the report noted.

The Pentagon declined to comment on the reports, and the White House has not confirmed any authorization by President Trump. Concurrently, Washington is seeking to strengthen security cooperation with North and West African nations, encouraging their acquisition of US military equipment and services, while fostering cooperation between NATO and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which includes Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
