Oman signals possible charges for Strait of Hormuz transit

MUSCAT, June 27 (YPA) – Oman has informed European officials that transit through the Strait of Hormuz may in future be subject to potential charges, and that a return to pre-crisis conditions is unlikely.

Bloomberg reported on Friday, citing sources, that Omani officials indicated to European counterparts that vessels passing through the strategic waterway could be required to contribute to certain service-related costs.

It added that the United States, European countries, and regional actors are increasingly monitoring discussions involving Oman and Iran over possible arrangements related to maritime transit in the strait.

The report noted that it remains unclear whether any such charges would be mandatory, with Oman reportedly examining different international models for managing key shipping routes.

The Bloomberg report also referenced earlier Iranian statements suggesting work on a revised legal framework for the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with Oman, alongside Tehran’s position that maritime passage remains open but future arrangements may differ from previous conditions following recent regional tensions.
