Switzerland talks collapse, Iran warns Washington following Trump’s threats over Strait of Hormuz

SWITZERLAND, June 21 (YPA) – Ongoing negotiations in the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock have suffered a sudden setback following the withdrawal of the Iranian delegation in protest against recent statements by US President Donald Trump regarding a “potential attempt to control the Strait of Hormuz,” which Tehran viewed as undermining the dialogue and attempting to impose conditions.

In the first practical test of the understanding between Washington and Tehran, the Iranian delegation—led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf—left the talks following an initial 80-minute session that included delegations from the United States (led by Vice President JD Vance), Qatar, and Pakistan.

The diplomatic setback coincided with a sharp escalation in rhetoric from Qalibaf, who warned Washington, asserting that Tehran places no weight on American threats. He stressed that any potential agreement is conditional on implementing prior understandings, particularly regarding halting regional escalation and achieving tangible sanctions relief.

Warning the US, Qalibaf added, “No matter how much the Americans talk, we are the ones who act and execute on the ground… It is better for the Americans to be cautious in their statements, as our forces are ready to respond to them in another way.”

According to the Iranian news agencies “Fars” and “Tasnim”, Trump’s threats brought the talks to an immediate halt. Iranian assessments indicate that the ceiling of American rhetoric has crossed from “managing the dispute” into political pressure, deeply entrenching mistrust and complicating prospects for a return to the negotiating table.
