British Defense Minister resigns over dispute over military spending

LONDON, June 11 (YPA) – British Defence Secretary John Healey announced his resignation on Thursday due to a disagreement with Prime Minister Keir Starmer over the defense budget.

In a letter published on the X platform, Healey explained that he and the Treasury had failed to secure sufficient resources for defense in light of escalating threats, describing the letter as “one I never expected to write.”

Healey criticized the Defence Investment Plan (DIP) presented on Monday, deeming it far below what was needed, and that additional support would be delayed while readiness was urgently required during the first two years.

He also noted that spending would not exceed 2.68% of GDP in 2030, compared to the 2.6% already projected for next year.
