Senior Iran official blames US for tensions, cites ceasefire violations, blockade

TEHRAN, June 08 (YPA) – Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that violations of a ceasefire and a U.S.-imposed naval blockade were behind recent regional tensions,

In remarks on Monday, he added that the United States does not genuinely seek either a ceasefire or meaningful dialogue.

Ghalibaf said statements attributed to U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a memorandum of understanding were inconsistent with previously agreed terms.

He added that Iran did not see diplomacy and confrontation as mutually exclusive, arguing instead that each has its place depending on circumstances.

The Iranian speaker further affirmed that a combination of military pressure and diplomatic engagement had been used to support Lebanon and counter blockade measures, stating that Iran had at times deterred attacks through the threat of retaliation and at other times through direct response.

Ghalibaf also said Iran would work to undermine a naval blockade, framing it as part of a broader strategy to end the conflict and establish long-term security rather than normalize relations with Washington.

He reaffirmed that Iran’s armed forces remain on alert and said the country would continue to defend its interests and pursue future strategic gains.
