Germany calls for investigation into alleged sexual violence of Palestinian detainees

BERLIN, May 14 (YPA) – German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Gies emphasized the need for an investigation into the information revealed in a New York Times report concerning the sexual violence and abuse against Palestinian detainees inside Israeli prisons.

In press remarks late Wednesday, Gies said, “In principle, the German government condemns sexual violence in all its forms.”

He added, “We don’t have our own findings regarding the cases mentioned in the report. But what’s important now is to investigate these allegations and hold the perpetrators accountable.”

Responding to a question on whether Germany would support independent organizations seeking access to Israeli prisons to investigate the claims, Giese said Germany has consistently worked to enable the International Committee of the Red Cross to access Palestinian detainees.
