Cargo ship bound for Qatar hit by suspected attack near Doha

DOHA, May 10 (YPA) – A commercial cargo vessel traveling from Abu Dhabi was targeted on Sunday in waters near Qatar, resulting in a minor fire but no reported casualties.

Earlier in the day, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said that a bulk cargo ship reported being struck by an unidentified projectile while sailing approximately 23 nautical miles northeast of Doha.

According to the authority, the impact caused a small fire that was later brought under control. The ship’s captain reported no injuries among the crew and no environmental damage resulting from the incident.

UKMTO also urged maritime operators to reassess security risks and navigation routes before transiting through the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened regional tensions, ongoing U.S. military actions, and Iranian restrictions affecting maritime traffic in the area.

Separately, Ministry of Defence of Qatar confirmed that a commercial cargo vessel had been targeted by a drone in Qatari territorial waters northeast of Mesaieed Port on Sunday morning while en route from Abu Dhabi.

The ministry stated that the attack caused a limited fire on board without resulting in injuries. It added that the vessel continued its journey toward Mesaieed Port after the blaze was extinguished and that the relevant authorities had taken the necessary measures and coordinated their response to the incident.
