ABYAN, April. 13 (YPA) – Angry protesters blocked the coastal road linking the governorates of Aden and Al-Mahra in Ahwar district of Abyan governorate on Monday, expressing their rejection of what they described as “systematic manipulation” of humanitarian aid provided by international organizations.
The protesters blocked the road to trucks in two different ways along the international highway, holding the committees overseeing aid distribution fully responsible for depriving hundreds of poor and destitute families in the district of their relief rations.
Participants in the protest indicated that the aid distributed by CARE and the World Food Programme (WFP) is no longer reaching its intended recipients due to administrative and organizational deficiencies.
They asserted that the current beneficiary lists have been subject to widespread manipulation, explaining that most of the listed names do not meet the eligibility criteria, while the most needy and suffering families have been left out.
The protesters also considered this exclusion a violation of the principles of humanitarian work and a disregard for the difficult living conditions faced by families in Ahwar.
They demanded that the responsible parties in CARE and the World Food Programme conduct an immediate and urgent review of the beneficiary lists and include the families actually affected.
In addition, they stressed the need to replace the CARE supervisory committees in Ahwar district to ensure the integrity of the distribution and that aid reaches those who deserve it, affirming that they would continue their escalation until they obtain their legitimate rights.
