Emirati company leaves its employees facing hunger in Socotra

SOCOTRA, April 11 (YPA) – Many employees of an Emirati company established an open protest camp on Saturday in Hadibo, the capital of Yemen’s Socotra archipelago, located east of the Gulf of Aden.

Human rights sources in the city stated that former workers of the company “PrimeFish Seafood” set up the camp in front of the company’s headquarters to protest arbitrary dismissals and unpaid financial dues.

The sources confirmed that the Emirati firm abruptly terminated its operations on the island, laying off workers and administrators without any legal settlements or commitments to pay owed salaries and bonuses, causing hardship for dozens of families.

They added that the company’s management has delayed resolving these claims, while local company officials remain silent.

The former employees demanded immediate compensation and full payment of their dues, threatening to continue their sit-in until their “legitimate” demands are met.

Notably, the company had been exploiting Socotra’s marine resources and exporting them to the UAE before its sudden withdrawal in early January, leaving unresolved employee claims and incomplete contracts.
