MADRID, Feb. 16 (YPA) – The Spanish Ministry of Defense is currently evaluating a potential deal with the German consortium “EuroSpike GmbH” to acquire the “MELLS” anti-tank system.
This move comes as an alternative to the Israeli “Spike” missile contract, which was canceled last September due to humanitarian concerns regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip.
The “MELLS” system is a European version manufactured in Germany. It is expected to be free of Israeli components, despite the manufacturer, Rafael, holding a minority stake in the consortium.
The Spanish Army seeks to secure between 2,300 and 2,400 missiles to equip infantry and “VCR Dragón” armored personnel carriers, in addition to 240 missiles for the Marine Corps.
The original canceled contract was valued at €287.5 million, including 168 launchers.
System Advantages and Strategic Options
Maria Amparo Valcarce, Secretary of State for Security, emphasized that the new system is highly compatible with the “Spike LR” systems used by Spain since 2009. This compatibility is expected to reduce training costs and accelerate operational readiness.
While Spain has explored other options, such as collaborating with Turkey’s “Roketsan” for the transfer of “UMTAS” and “KARAOK” missile technology, those talks have not yet resulted in an agreement. The Directorate General of Armament and Material (DGAM) remains in the technical review phase before a final decision is reached.
