Spain declines joining Trump’s “peace council” on Gaza

BRUSSELS, Jan. 23 (YPA) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez officially announced on Friday that Spain will not join the “Peace Council” launched by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Speaking after an EU summit in Brussels, Sánchez emphasized that this refusal stems from a commitment to multilateralism and international law, noting that the proposed council fails to include the Palestinian Authority—a move he considers a fundamental flaw in any Gaza-related initiative.

Supporting this stance, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares insisted that Palestinians must remain at the heart of any political or security arrangements. He outlined Spain’s diplomatic priorities as securing a permanent ceasefire, opening all border crossings for humanitarian aid, and establishing a unified Palestinian government for both Gaza and the West Bank.

Ultimately, Spain’s decision reflects broader European concerns regarding the council’s framework and its alignment with United Nations standards.
