Mass protests in Copenhagen reject U.S. ambitions to annex Greenland

COPENHAGEN, Jan. 18 (YPA) – Thousands gathered in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, on Saturday to protest President Donald Trump’s expressed intent to annex the autonomous territory of Greenland to the United States.

Protesters filled City Hall Square, waving Greenlandic and Danish flags and chanting slogans in the local language asserting the island’s identity. Participants also carried satirical banners calling on the U.S. to stay away from their affairs, with phrases mocking prominent American political slogans.

The demonstrations, organized by civic groups and coalitions representing Greenlandic residents, coincide with the visit of a U.S. Congressional delegation to Copenhagen. Organizers aim to send a firm public message rejecting the American proposal.

Similar protests are scheduled to take place in other Danish cities in the coming days.
