WASHINGTON, Jan. 18 (YPA) – The administration of US President Donald Trump wants countries to contribute at least $1 billion for permanent seats on the Peace Council for the Gaza Strip, Bloomberg reported citing the council’s draft charter.
According to the draft charter, each member state will serve on the council for no more than three years from the moment of signing, subject to the chairman’s approval. The three-year membership period will not apply to countries that contribute more than $1 billion in cash to the peace council in the first year after the agreement comes into effect.
Trump would serve as the council’s first head and would have veto power over all decisions, even those adopted by majority vote. He would also personally manage the council’s funds, a provision described by sources as unacceptable to most potential member states.
Sources told Bloomberg that invitations may have been extended to several European countries. Several nations are reportedly strongly opposed to the draft charter and are working toward a collective rejection of its proposals.
President Trump had announced that the “Peace Council” would include U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
