SANAA, Jan. 18 (YPA) – In a development highlighting the double standards of the UN Security Council (UNSC), the Council recently adopted Resolution 2812 (2026), with both China and Russia abstaining from the vote.
The resolution mandates that the UN Secretary-General continue submitting monthly reports on alleged attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. This comes despite the fact that such operations effectively ceased following the agreement to end Israeli aggression on Gaza in October 2025.
Furthermore, these operations exclusively targeted Israel-linked vessels in response to the genocide in Gaza, making the resolution practically redundant following the ceasefire.
The resolution reveals a clear bias by focusing on Yemen while completely ignoring repeated American violations in the Caribbean Sea. There, the United States has engaged in acts of “piracy” against Venezuelan oil tankers, defying international maritime law.
The Security Council’s silence on US transgressions, contrasted with its scrutiny of Yemeni operations—which were conducted under international and humanitarian law to counter Israeli massacres—underscores its role as a political tool for major powers.
China and Russia: Rejection of Political Bias
The Russian and Chinese delegations maintained a firm stance against politicized resolutions. Anna Evstigneeva, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, stated, “The resolution drafted by the US and Greece provides no added value. We cannot support it, though we will not block it at the request of regional stakeholders. We urge colleagues not to waste resources on politicized topics that are no longer relevant. In the current situation, the Council would be better served monitoring the Caribbean rather than the Red Sea.”
Similarly, Sun Li, China’s Deputy Ambassador, emphasized that while maritime security is a shared responsibility, Council resolutions must respect the sovereignty of Yemen and the UN Charter. He noted that military strikes carried out by certain states against Yemen following Resolution 2722 only exacerbated security risks and undermined the peace process.
Sanaa Ridicules the Extension
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sanaa ridiculed the decision, asserting that the Security Council has transformed into a political instrument serving US interests.
In an official statement, the ministry confirmed that Yemeni naval operations ended immediately upon the Gaza ceasefire, proving they were strictly linked to opposing Israeli aggression and were never a threat to general international navigation.
The statement praised the balanced positions of Russia and China for refusing to succumb to unilateral US policies. It further noted that the Council’s blatant disregard for American “bullying” against Venezuela, and its threats against other nations, confirms that it is no longer an independent institution for peace but a platform for major powers to bypass international justice.
