Commander of “Shabwa Defense Brigade” survives assassination attempt

SHABWA, Dec. 22 (YPA) – Fawzi Hussein al-Saadi, commander of the UAE-funded “3rd Shabwa Defense Brigade,” survived an assassination attempt on Sunday following an ambush in the Arma district, east of the oil-rich Shabwa province.

Local sources reported that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) targeted al-Saadi’s military vehicle while passing through the Al-Uqla area. The commander and his escorts reportedly escaped the blast unharmed. While no group has officially claimed responsibility, sources suggest the involvement of extremist elements operating in the region.

This attack follows a recent shift in military control, as Shabwa Defence forces expanded their presence into sites previously held by rival factions affiliated with Islah Party.

The province has seen a rise in IED attacks and drone strikes targeting security sites since August 2022.
