MICHIGAN, Nov. 04 (YPA) – Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has announced his victory in the Michigan U.S. Senate election, defeating his Republican opponent Mike Rogers to become the first Muslim senator in United States history.
The victory of the 42-year-old Michigan-born physician, who aligns with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, secures a vital seat for the Democrats as he succeeds retiring Senator Gary Peters.
Despite late-stage campaign challenges—including an endorsement of his Republican opponent by former Congresswoman Haley Stevens and a fierce Republican opposition campaign—El-Sayed successfully rallied voters around campaign promises centered on universal healthcare and reforming the U.S. for-profit medical system to assist financially struggling citizens.
