Displaced Yemeni teachers protest in Aden over unpaid salaries

ADEN, Nov. 02 (YPA) – Dozens of displaced teachers from Yemen’s Bayda province held a protest on Sunday outside the Ministry of Civil Service in Aden, demanding payment of their salaries, which they say have been withheld for the past ten months.

The protesting teachers gathered from several districts across Aden — including Al Buraiqeh, Al-Tawahi, Sheikh Othman, Al-Mansoura, Al-Arish and Al-Mamdara — as well as from displacement camps in Dar Saad, Al-Basateen and Al-Shaab. Others also came from districts in the neighboring provinces of Abyan, Lahj and Yafa.

Participants raised banners expressing their deep frustration over the continued neglect of their plight, affirming that they had dedicated their lives to serving the nation and educating generations for decades, only to find themselves today unable to provide for their families’ basic needs after their salaries were cut off since the beginning of 2025.

They accused authorities loyal to the Saudi-led coalition of manipulating the salary system, noting that teachers’ wages before the war exceeded 1,000 Saudi riyals, but have now been reduced to between 100 and 200 Saudi riyals only. They considered this drop as an insult to teachers and a destruction of their families’ livelihoods.

The teachers called on all media outlets and humanitarian organizations — including the United Nations office in Aden, the Quartet Committee, and the coalition — to intervene urgently to save them from hunger and to ensure the payment of their overdue salaries, in line with other public employees.
