TAIZ, Oct. 12 (YPA) – The city of Taiz, which is under the Saudi-led coalition’s control in southwest Yemen, witnessed a comprehensive and unprecedented strike by bakeries and ovens on Sunday causing a severe crisis in providing bread to citizens.
The strike came in protest against a decision by the coalition-affiliated authorities obligating bakery owners to sell one kilogram of bread for 1,200 riyals according to the weight system.
Bakery owners confirmed that the decision is incompatible with the increasing rise in production costs, basic material prices, and fuel, demanding a review of the fixed price to cover costs and achieve a fair profit margin.
Conversely, citizens’ complaints escalated as they suffered from their inability to obtain bread since the morning, leading to queues and crowding in front of the few bakeries that did not adhere to the strike.
