NEW YORK, Sept. 26 (YPA) – Aidarous al-Zubaidi, president of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), has called for elections in areas controlled by the Saudi-led coalition, arguing that this is necessary to address the lack of a participatory mechanism within the Presidential Leadership Council and the government.
Al-Zubaidi, who is a member of the Presidential Leadership Council, made these remarks during a “Sky News Arabia” interview from the United States.
The move, he explained, aims to transfer power and form an effective government and presidential council, as the current model of consensus among coalition-affiliated parties has reached its limits. He attacked his partners in power, calling them the “inherited old force.”
The STC’s president reiterated his push for the “restoration of the southern state” as a strategic goal backed by the UAE, asserting that it would lead to UN membership.
Al-Zubaidi also revealed a comprehensive military and economic strategy to end the Houthis’ military capabilities in Sanaa, with the goal of securing Israeli navigation and protecting the Gulf region.
However, Al-Zubaidi’s call for elections was met with rejection by some in the southern community, who believe it could undermine the southern cause and revive old forces at its expense.
