ADEN, Aug. 07 (YPA) – A number of judges were injured on Wednesday after being attacked during their protest in the coalition-controlled city of Aden, south of Yemen.
Eyewitnesses affirmed that the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) personnel from the Facility Protection Unit responsible for guarding the “Judicial Council” in Aden, forcibly assaulted the protesting judges to disperse their sit-in.
The sources added that the council chairman refused to meet with judges’ representatives during the protest the Judges’ Club organized to demand improvements to their financial and health conditions.
Other sources reported that judges in Aden announced an escalation of protests by extending the strike to three days a week, until their demands be met.
The assault on the judges sparked anger and resentment in judicial and human rights circles, as they were considered a violation of the right to peaceful expression and demand rights.
The Aden Judges Club demanding the redress of stalled promotions and the payment of financial dues, which have been suspended since 2017, in addition to reform of the healthcare system, an end to arbitrary transfers, allocation of budgets to the courts, and a reduction in corruption within the council.
