Aden bakeries raise bread price amid currency collapse

ADEN, April 16 (YPA) -Bakeries’ association in Aden has announced an increase in the price of a loaf of bread (roti), from 70 to 100 Yemeni riyals in the coming days.

The association attributed the increase in the price to the sharp depreciation of the local currency against the US dollar and the Saudi riyal, as well as the skyrocketing prices of raw materials such as flour and fuel.

It explained that the currency collapse has severely impacted bakery owners, pushing many toward bankruptcy, which forced them to raise prices in a bid to avoid total financial collapse.

The association noted that the price of roti was set at 70 Yemeni riyals in February 2024, when the exchange rate of the Saudi riyal stood at 405 Yemeni riyals. Today, however, the rate has exceeded 620 riyals, which has doubled production costs and piled up debts on bakery owners.

The association reported that multiple bakeries have shut down due to financial strain and an inability to continue operations.

It called on the government loyal to Saudi-led coalition to take urgent measures to halt the economic deterioration and curb the collapse of the local currency, warning that failure to act could lead to a severe food crisis, especially given that most Yemeni families rely on bread as a staple food.
