SANAA, Mar. 08 (YPA) – Human rights sources have revealed the existence of secret prisons supervised by the UAE on the Yemeni island of Mayon, located in the Bab al-Mandab region at the southern entrance to the Red Sea.
The sources indicated that the UAE is holding dozens of abductees and detainees who oppose its presence in Aden and the rest of the Yemeni southern province, in addition to detainees of other Arab nationalities, including Sudan.
The same sources confirmed that the detainees who are forcibly disappeared in these secret prisons suffer from harsh detention conditions that violate their human rights, including torture and medical neglect, which raises concerns about their fate.
The sources added that these secret prisons come within the framework of the ongoing violations committed by the UAE against opponents of its policies in Yemen, noting that these practices also include a series of assassinations and kidnappings that have affected hundreds of civilians in the southern provinces, especially in Aden and neighboring areas.
It is worth noting that Yemen’s Mayon Island, located in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, has been used for years as a military base run by the UAE in cooperation with foreign forces. A special runway has recently been built for the base the UAE established on the island to expand its military presence in the region.
