DOHA, Feb. 16 (YPA) – Dr. Basem Naim, a member of the Hamas Political Bureau, said that the movement’s presence “today in the administration of Gaza is a necessary choice to avoid chaos and internal fighting.
He stressed, “We will not accept any administration imposed on Gaza outside of national consensus.”
Naim also confirmed that the movement is not committed to ruling the Gaza Strip and that it is prepared to relinquish power within the framework of Palestinian national consensus.
This was stated during his participation in the “Al-Jazeera Forum” in the Qatari capital, Doha, on Saturday, explaining that “Hamas,” since before and during the war, has repeatedly expressed its readiness to hand over the administration of the Strip within a national vision.
He stated that Hamas handed over power in 2014 to a national consensus government and dissolved the administrative committee in 2017, but these efforts did not lead to Palestinian unity, according to his description.
Naim explained that Egypt proposed last August the formation of an independent civilian committee to administer Gaza by decree from President Mahmoud Abbas, with the Ramallah government as its reference. He noted that Hamas showed great flexibility in agreeing to the proposal, including security and crossing affairs.
However, Naim pointed out that the Palestinian leadership rejected the initiative and the national unity government without offering a practical alternative.
