NEW DELHI, Feb. 10 (YPA) – Protesters outside India’s parliament have burned an effigy of US President Donald Trump, protesting against footage showing degrading treatment during the deportation of about 100 Indian migrants from the United States.
One deportee testified to the degrading treatment, describing it as torture. He said they were verbally abused and forced to sit for the entire time, while those standing were beaten.
The head of the US Border Patrol, Michael Banks, said the deportation of “illegal immigrants” to India was the longest deportation ever carried out on military transport. He also released a video of the deportees, including women, in shackles.
Another deportee said they were all shackled during the 40-hour journey, even to use the bathroom.
The incidents come ahead of a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the US president at the White House.
India’s foreign minister has vowed to crack down on illegal immigration.
