BAGHDAD, Jan. 29 (YPA) -Iraq plans to purchase French Dassault Rafale fighters to strengthen the country’s air defense capabilities.
According to recent reports, Iraq has planned to purchase 12 Rafale fighter jets worth $3.2 billion, of which the first $240 million were paid as part of the down payment.
Reports of Iraq’s deal to purchase French Rafale fighter jets emerged in October 2024.
According to French newspaper La Tribune, Iraq has requested 12 jets with a total value of $3.2 billion, and has made an initial payment of $240 million. However, the deal has faced some issues, leading to significant delays in its implementation.
In addition, due to the pressure from the Israeli government, the sale of Meteor air-launched missiles to Iraq will be blocked in the same way as it was with the Egyptian Rafale fighters, which use the French MICA EM/IR as their main missile system.
Moreover, Iraq is seeking to purchase fixed radar stations from the French Ground Master family, with the aim of establishing a central system for airspace surveillance.
These steps are part of Iraq’s efforts to modernize its air forces and strengthen its defense capabilities.
