SANAA, Jan. 29 (YPA) – Foreign Minister in the Sanaa government, Jamal Amer, stressed, on Wednesday, the importance of the United Nations and all international organizations, both governmental and non-governmental, operating in Yemen to follow and respect the country’s constitution and laws, and to refrain from any actions that violate them or contradict the sovereignty and security of the country.
This came during his meeting today with Julien Harneis, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen.
During the meeting, the foreign minister reiterated the commitment of the Republic of Yemen to the UN Charter and international conventions, including those related to the immunities and privileges of UN staff.
He highlighted the Republic of Yemen’s keenness on the security and safety of all UN and international organization staff.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted the commitment of the Republic of Yemen to ensuring the safety and security of all United Nations and international organization personnel.
He also reaffirmed the Yemeni government’s clear stance on strengthening relations with the United Nations and various international organizations, based on a principle of mutual respect and adherence to the United Nations Charter and international agreements on one hand, and the Yemeni constitution and effective national laws on the other.
He warned against attempts to drag the Yemeni government into discussing the suspension or continuation of UN operations in any specific province independently and separately from the rest of Yemen’s provinces, stressing that Sanaa rejects the principle of arm-twisting policies, which have proven to be ineffective and futile over the past years.
The UN Resident Coordinator, for his part, stated that the United Nations is committed to maintaining its presence in Yemen to serve the interests of the Yemeni people.
He emphasized that the UN is willing to engage in discussions on all matters through constructive and collaborative dialogue.
