MARIB, Nov. 24 (YPA) – A senior official in Aden has revealed an unprecedented scandal of looting the funds of international organizations and donors in the city of Marib, northern Yemen.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor in the government loyal to the Saudi-led coalition, Mahmoud Saleh, said in an interview with the “Aden Independent” channel that during his visit to Marib province, he found that there were “70 camps for displaced persons that were nominal camps without residents,” adding that “there are no displaced persons in Marib as is being promoted.”
Saleh’s statements sparked a state of anger in the “Executive Unit for the Management of Displaced Persons Camps” in Marib, which issued on Saturday a statement accusing the government official of “lying” and distorting the role of the executive unit, affirming that it cares for “millions of displaced persons in Marib.”
Human rights sources in Marib had revealed to the “Yemen Press Agency” about two years ago that the numbers of displaced people announced in Marib city are “fictitious numbers, inflated for suspicious purposes related to looting money and aid in the name of displaced people.”
Most of those announced as displaced people in Marib are in fact families of Islah Party recruits who were brought to Marib city and their numbers do not reach (millions) of displaced people as the pro-coalition governorate authorities claim, according to the sources.
The sources demanded at the time a transparent investigation into the funds taken from international organizations and donors in the name of “displaced people” in Marib city.
