Five tremors recorded west of Gulf of Aden

DHAMAR, Oct. 22 (YPA) – The National Center for Earthquake and Volcano Monitoring and Studies in Dhamar province recorded on Monday five moderate and light tremors west of the Gulf of Aden.

The head of the center, Eng. Mohammed Hussein Al-Houthi, explained in a statement to the official Yemeni News Agency (Saba) in Sanaa that “An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale was recorded at the intersection of latitude and longitude lines 12.107 north and 46.09 east, at 1:12 pm Sanaa time.”

He added that the tremor was followed by two seismic activities in the same location, the first with a magnitude of 2.9 at 1:25 pm and the other with a magnitude of 2.8 at 1:27 pm.

The monitoring stations also recorded two tremors at the intersection of longitude and latitude “12.12” north and “46.15” east, the first with a magnitude of “2.5” on the Richter scale at “1:27” in the afternoon, and the second with a magnitude of “3.6” degrees at “3:04” in the afternoon, according to the center.

Al-Houthi stated that these earthquakes are part of the natural activities recorded in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea as a result of the continuous opening of their bottoms at a rate of 3-5 cm per year and the movement of the Arabian plate, as a result, towards the northeast at the same rate.
