Deterioration of essential service sparks angry protests in Hadramout

HADRAMOUT, Sept. 04 (YPA) – Angry protests erupted on Wednesday in the city of Mukalla, the provincial capital of Hadramaut, which is under the control of Emirati factions in eastern Yemen.

Local sources in the city explained that dozens of protesters in Al-Dees area blocked the main streets due to the collapse of electricity service and the deterioration of living conditions as a result of rising prices, in addition to stopping means of transportation because the lethal dose that the coalition-backed Aden government imposed on fuel last week.

The protesters blocked the streets leading to the center of Mukalla with stones and burning tires, the sources reported, indicating that this comes as an extension of the popular anger since last week due to the lack of diesel, the increase in transport fees and the collapse of electricity.

The sources explained that the head of Basweed district of Mukalla submitted his resignation due to the catastrophic collapse of the service conditions in the city.

The city is witnessing a state of chaos and civil disobedience with the continuation of the inclusive strike by Hadramout University students for the straight second day due to the increase in university registration fees, amidst the spread of discontent in the coastal districts.

For the fifth consecutive day, a number of coastal districts are being witnessed widespread local demonstrations in the areas of Shihr, Ghayl Bawazir and Brom Mayfa’a, in protest against the collapse of electricity services and in denunciation of the continued looting of natural resources, especially gold, by Emirati companies.
