People’s Assembly Elections kick off in Syria

DAMASUCS, July 15 (YPA) – The parliamentary elections in Syria commenced at 7 a.m. today, Monday, according to the official Syrian news agency, SANA.

The agency reported that there are 1,516 candidates competing for 250 seats in the People’s Assembly.

Lists of candidates have been prepared and sent to all polling stations, which number 8,151 across all Syrian provinces.

This election, scheduled by President Bashar al-Assad, is the fourth legislative term to be held since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis in 2011.

The decree signed by Assad stipulates that the number of People’s Assembly members allocated to each sector—labor and agriculture and other segments of the population—will be determined for each electoral district, which are distributed across various Syrian provinces.
