UN Security Council passes resolution to establish ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan

NEW YORK, March 25 (YPA) – The UN Security Council, in its session on Monday, adopted a “ceasefire” resolution in Gaza during the holy month of Ramadan.

During his speech, Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations objected to the term “ceasefire,” as it did not contain the word “permanent,” and said, “We request that an oral amendment be made to the draft resolution that includes adding the phrase permanent ceasefire,” but the Council did not adopt changing the term.

The draft resolution was presented by the elected members of the Security Council: Algeria, Ecuador, Guyana, Japan, Malta, Korea, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Slovenia, and Switzerland.

The draft resolution received 14 supportive votes out of 15, as the United States of America abstained from voting.

The UN Security Council sought again to adopt a text demanding an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza, a demand that had previously been hindered by the United States several times, but it recently showed signs of a change in tone with its ally.

The draft resolution calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all “hostages” and the guarantee of humanitarian access.

Since October 7, the Security Council has only been able to adopt two resolutions of a humanitarian nature regarding the file of aggression against Gaza, out of eight draft resolutions put to vote.

The Israeli occupation forces, supported by the United States and Europe, continue to commit the crime of genocide in the Gaza Strip for the 171st day in a row by launching dozens of air strikes, artillery shelling, and fire belts, as well as committing bloody massacres against civilians.
